Installing Shutters

Installing your shutters isn't a difficult processat all. The key here is to work with shutters thatare specifically built for each individual windowopening in conjunction with detailed instructions.

Many companies that install shutters will tellcustomers that the shutters need to be installedby a certified installer. This isn't the case,as you can install your shutters like a pro withno experience at all.

Measuring your shuttersTo properly install shutters to a window opening, you'll need to measure. First, you'll need todetermine if the shutters will be mounted to theinside or the outside of the window opening.

Inside mount installationThe preferred means of installation is to mountshutters directly to the window jamb inside of thewindow opening. This method is generally cleanerthan mounting to the outside of the window andit doesn't require additional hang strips or framestrips. Keep in mind, the window must be somewhatsquare and have a solid jamb for you to attachthe screws to.

To determine the window depth, measure from thefront plane of the window back to the nearestobstruction that'll prevent the louvers fromrotating. If you prefer, the company you areordering from can also tell you the window depthfor the style of shutters you order.

On occasion, a supplier of shutters will offera second inside mounting method that uses rearhanging strips concealed behind the shutterpanels that will allow adjustment up, down, left, and right for easier alignment. This methodis ideal if the window is out of square or ifit has a drywall opening without a solid woodjamb.

Outside mount installationOutside mount installations use frames that attachto the wall or existing trim just to the outsideof the opening of the window. Normally, the frame will surround the shutter panels on threeor four sides, depending on if a lower stillexists.

If you go with a cafe type shutter style, thehang strips are used on either side of the shutter panels. The frame or hang strips willscrew directly to the wall or trim, and theshutter hinge to the frame or the hanging strips.

Always play it safe and measure with a steel tapemeasure, which will give you the most accuratemeasurements. Don't attempt to measure with a fabric tape or yard stick - as this will leadyou to a poor installation.
